My favorite "free" project

Over the years I've done lots and lots of projects and spent lots and lots of money. But every now and then I'm able to make a change that costs next to nothing. This is one of those projects. I decided to tackle this one after being bored one night, so I didn't think to take before pics. So what project did I manage to do for free? Here's a hint:

As most of you know, I pulled the microwave and upper cabinets out and created a custom hood. But before I pulled the microwave down, I needed to figure out where to put it. If you've seen the kitchen, you know I have A LOT of drawers. Too many I dare say (15 to be exact). The drawers in the island became instant junk drawers because they were super deep and wide and didn't serve any real purpose. I knew pretty quickly they would be a great place to put the microwave.

Now bear with me on this because I took no pics during the process (remember, late night/bored project). Luckily, it was super easy. After removing the drawers, I took the tracks off for all the drawers. I was left with a big open space. I knew I needed to have a shelf so I sat there for a few minutes and tried to come up with the easiest best solution. What I came up with has been great!

After thinking on it, I decided to take the front, back and side panels off of one of the big drawers. Next, I screwed the middle track back into the cabinet. What I ended up with was this:

Yes, that is paint on the plug. I am a lazy painter. But speaking of the plug, I had the plug moved down from the bar area to the cabinet so that I could actually use the microwave in the cabinet. It cost about $25, so I guess technically this wasn't a free projects. Close enough, though, right?

Once everything was painted and polyed I added the microwave and toaster oven and voila!

So there you have it! Until a few days ago, I really thought I wanted a door on it so I could cover it when not in use, but the more I've thought about it, the more I've realized that a door would just get in the way. I may change my mind and add one at some point, but for now I like it just the way it is.

** Please excuse the low quality pics. My camera is dead so I have to use the iphone.
